মাস চারেক আগে বর্তমান সংখ্যাটির প্রস্তুতিপর্বে আমাদের এমন এক অপূরণীয় ক্ষতির সম্মু্খীন হতে হয়েছে যেজন্য সম্পাদকীয় পরিষদ মানসিকভাবে প্রস্তুত ছিল না। বাংলা জর্নালের জন্মলগ্ন থেকে সম্পাদকীয় পরিষদের অন্যতম সদস্য দিনু বিল্লাহ ছিলেন আমাদের সহযোদ্ধা, সার্বক্ষণিক কর্মী এবং প্রেরণা ও ভরসার ঠাঁই। আগস্ট মাসের তৃতীয় সপ্তাহে আচম্বিতে উড়ে আসা একখণ্ড কালো মেঘের মতো এক দুঃসংবাদ আমাদের সম্পাদনা পর্ষদের সভ্যদের বাক্‌রহিত করে দেয়। সপ্তাহান্তের এক শুভ্রসুন্দর রৌদ্রস্নাত শনিবারের সকালে আচমকা মস্তিষ্কে রক্তক্ষরণে সুস্থসবল দিনু বিল্লাহ তাঁর বাড়িতে অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়েন। হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যাওয়ার অল্প সময়ের মধ্যে যে তিনি জ্ঞান হারালেন তা থেকে তাঁকে আর ফেরানো গেল না। জর্নালের চলার পথে তাঁর নিরন্তর নৈকট্য ও সাহচর্য থেকে হঠাৎ করে বঞ্চিত হয়ে পড়ায় আমার মধ্যে যে শূন্যতা তৈরি হয়েছে তা অমোচনীয়। ১৯৯৯ সালে টরন্টো থেকে দ্বিভাষিক এই পত্রিকাটি বের করার পেছনে রাষ্ট্রিক ও নাগরিকতার সীমানা অতিক্রমকারী বাংলাভাষীদের অসাম্প্রদায়িক ধর্মবিযুক্ত ভাষিক-সাংস্কৃতিক সত্তাকে তুলে ধরার আকাঙ্ক্ষাই কাজ করেছে। দিনু বিল্লাহ ছিলেন সেই আকাঙ্ক্ষারই মূর্ত প্রতীক। বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধের একজন অকুতোভয় বীর দিনু বিল্লাহ পাকিস্তানী সৈন্যদের হাতে যে নির্যাতন ও নিপীড়নের শিকার হয়েছিলেন তার দহন ও ক্ষত আজীবন তাঁর শরীর বহন করেছে। বিগত প্রায় দেড় বছর ধরে বাংলাদেশে ভারত, হিন্দু ও অন্যান্য ধর্মীয় সংখ্যালঘুদের বিরুদ্ধে রাষ্ট্রীয় ও ক্ষমতাসীনদের ইন্ধন ও প্ররোচনায় রক্ষণশীল মৌলবাদী ইসলামীদের যে তাণ্ডব শুরু হয়েছে তার মূল লক্ষ্য হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে বাঙালির ভাষিক-সাংস্কৃতিক সত্তা ও তার পরিচয়ের বিনাশ। দিনু বিল্লাহর পক্ষে দেশের এই পরিস্থিতি মেনে নেওয়া অসম্ভব হয়ে পড়েছিল। তিনি এতটাই সংক্ষুব্ধ ও মনোবেদনায় ভুগতেন যে প্রায় রাতই নির্ঘুম কাটাতেন। জানি না তাঁর অকাল মৃত্যুই তাঁকে হিন্দু যুবক দীপু চন্দ্র দাসকে পিটিয়ে পুড়িয়ে মারার শত শত জনের ভিডিওধারণের মানবেতর পৈশাচিক বর্বরোল্লাসের দৃশ্য দেখা থেকে বাঁচিয়ে দিল কি না! এক তীব্র অভিমানেই কি নিজেকে তিনি এই মৃত্যু উপত্যকা থেকে নির্বাসিত করলেন? হয়তো তাইই! দিনু বিল্লাহকে ঘিরে বর্তমান সংখ্যার শুরুতেই তাই তাঁর জীবনসঙ্গিনী মাহবুবা খানম এবং কবি, প্রাবন্ধিক তুষার গায়েনের রচনা দিয়েই জর্নালের সশ্রদ্ধ নিবেদন।

বিরাজমান সামাজিক, রাজনৈতিক ও ভূরাজনৈতিক অস্থির সময়ে লেখকদের পক্ষে সবকিছু থেকে নিজেকে বিযুক্ত রেখে কোনো একটি বিষয়ে গভীর মনোনিবেশ করা দুরূহ হয়ে পড়েছে। তাছাড়া যোগাযোগ মাধ্যমে সত্যমিথ্যা যাচাইয়ের উপায়টুকু যখন আর নিজের নিয়ন্ত্রণে থাকছে না, তখন বর্তমানকে বোঝার জন্য যে বস্তুনিষ্ঠতার দরকার সেটাও আয়ত্ত করা যাচ্ছে না। সংগত কারণেই আমাদের নির্ধারিত মুখ্য আলোচনার বিষয় ‘বাঙালির ভাষিক-সাংস্কৃতিক সত্তা: ঐতিহ্যের শেকড়’ নিয়ে যে কজন লেখকের মুখাপেক্ষী আমরা হয়েছিলাম ওপরে উল্লিখিত কারণগুলোর জন্য তাঁরা সেই লেখাগুলো লিখে উঠতে পারেননি। এরকম একটি সংকট থেকে উত্তরণের জন্যে ওই বিষয়ে প্রাসঙ্গিক অতীতের কোনো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ রচনার পুনর্পাঠ পাঠকদের জন্যে উপযোগী হবে বলে আমরা চিন্তক আহমদ শরীফের একটি রচনা পুনর্মুদ্রণ করছি। মুখ্য আলোচ্য বিষয়ের সঙ্গে পরোক্ষভাবে হলেও প্রাসঙ্গিক আরও কিছু রচনার মধ্যে রয়েছে ভারতীয় উচ্চাঙ্গ সঙ্গীতে সাম্প্রদায়িকতা নিয়ে জয়ন্তকুমার মুখোপাধ্যায়, ঊনবিংশ ও বিংশ শতাব্দীতে প্রকাশিত বঙ্গীয় মুসলিম সমাজেরর দুটি পত্রিকা নিয়ে হাসনারা খাতুন এবং দ্বিবিভাজিত লৈঙ্গিকতা বহির্ভূত সম্প্রদায়ের চর্চিত ভাষিকসত্তা নিয়ে শীর্ষাঙ্কর বসুর আলোচনা। এছাড়াও এ সংখ্যায় রয়েছে সমাজতান্ত্রিক ভাবনা ও নাট্যান্দোলন নিয়ে হিন্দোল নন্দী, নারীর স্বাধীন সত্তা প্রতিষ্ঠায় অগ্রগণ্য সারদা দেবী ও রাহেলা খাতুনের অবদান নিয়ে মীরাতুন নাহার, রবীন্দ্রনাথের শিক্ষাভাবনা নিয়ে রিঙ্কু দাস, রণজিৎ দাশের কবিতা নিয়ে শ্রীদীপ ভট্টাচার্য, বাংলা ভাষা ও বিজ্ঞান নিয়ে তুষার চক্রবর্তী এবং হেমন্ত-বর্ণনার তুলনামূলক সাহিত্যালোচনায় শিশির ভট্টাচার্য্যের লেখা।

এ সংখ্যায় আরও রয়েছে চট্টগ্রাম অস্ত্রাগার মামলার রায় নিয়ে শওকত মোস্তফার ধারাবাহিক অনুবাদের পাশাপাশি জহির রায়হান, হামিরউদ্দিন মিদ্যার গল্পের ইংরেজি অনুবাদ, মৃত্তিকা চাকমার গল্পের বাংলা অনুবাদ, আফসান চৌধুরী, অদিতি ফাল্গুনী, শিবব্রত বর্মন ও মণিদীপা সান্যালের গল্প এবং সুমী সিকানদার, অরুণাভ রাহারায় ও বেবী সাউয়ের কবিতা।

About four months ago when the current issue of the Journal was in its preparatory stage,our editorial board had to confront an irreversible damage for which it was not mentally prepared. From the onset of the Journal’s launch, Dinu Billah was our co-warrior, all-time worker and a source of inspiration and reliance. In the third week of August, like an ominous dark cloud,sad news made our members of the editorial board speechless. On a sunny unblemished Saturday morning in his home,the healthy active Dinu Billah suddenly fell ill by a stroke out of blue. Moments after arriving at the hospital, Dinu lost consciousness and went into a stage of no return. The sudden ceasing of Dinu’s closeness and uninterrupted companionship in our journey to keep the Journal running has left an irreversible aching void in me. The desire behind launching the bi-lingual Bangla Journal in 1999 was to highlight the secular non-communal lingua-cultural selves of Bangla speaking people beyond the boundaries of nation state and citizenship. Dinu Billah was the embodiment of that spirit.Dinu, a fearless associate of the freedom fighters during the Bangladesh Liberation war, was severely tortured and assaulted by the Pakistani army during his captivity. The torture left a permanent scar on his body and soul. He couldn’t get any relief from that trauma till his death. For the last one and a half year, Bangladesh has been witnessing an anti-Indian frenzy, oppression and violence against Hindus and other religious and ethnic minorities by the Islamists, who receive tacit encouragements from the state and administration. The goal of this mayhem is to destroy the identity of Bangalis and their lingua-cultural selves. Dinu couldn’t take this anymore. He was so disturbed and anguished by the sorry state of his beloved country that he started to pass his nights sleepless. I don’t really know whether his death has relieved him from witnessing the horrendous scene of barbaric mob lynching and videographing of setting afire the body of a Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das! Was it his piqued sensitiveness that removed him from this Death Valley? Who knows, that seemed to be the case! The present issue of the Journal begins with tributary notes to Dinu by his wife Mahbuba Khanam and poet, essayist Tushar Gayen.

The existing turbulent socio-political and geo-political climate is an anathema to writers who needs a relative calm and detachment to immerse in their works. Besides, to attain any objective perspective becomes harder when deciphering the truth from a lie in the medium of communications no longer under the control of individual’s intellect.So, it’s understable why we couldn’t obtain our intended articles on the main theme ‘The lingua-cultural selves of Bangalis: the root of its tradition’, from a few select writers we had requested. The above mentioned factors were responsible for their inability. To compensate the dearth we thought that it would be worthwhile to reread an important relevant article on the subject by scholar, thinker Ahmed Sharif. Articles in this issue by Jayanta Kumar Mukherjee on communalism in the Indian classical music; by Hasnara Khatun on two 19th and 20th century newspapers published by the Bangali muslims and by Shirsanakar Basu on Queer linguistics to some degreeare related to our main theme. In addition Miratun Nahar writes on the contributions of two extraordinary women Sarala Devi and Rahila Khatun; Rinku Das on Rabindranath’s ideas about education; Sreedeep Bhattacharya on the poetry of Ranjit Das; Tushar Chakraborty on Bangla language and science; Hindol Nandy on Socialist thought and theatre movement and Shishir Bhattacharja on a comparative analysis of description of Hemanta (Autumn) by poets of different languages.

The current issue also includes an ongoing translation of the judgement in the case ofthe Chittagong Armoury Raid, poems by Shumi Sikander, Arunava Rhaha Roy and Baby Shaw; stories by Afsan Chowdhury, Auditi Falguni, Shibabrata Barman and Manidipa Sanyal, as well as translations of stories written by Zahir Raihan, Mrittika Chakma and Hamiruddin Middya.
