আমাদের বর্তমান সংখ্যাটির মূল আলোচ্য বিষয় নির্ধারণ করা হয়েছিল, পুরুষতান্ত্রিকতার বিরুদ্ধে সমকালিক লড়াই: বাংলায় এবং অন্যত্র, সাধারণত আমরা বছরের শুরুতে যখন মূল আলোচ্য একটি বিষয় বেছে নিয়ে লেখা আহ্বান করে থাকি সেজন্য ছয় থেকে সাত মাস সময় দিয়ে থাকি যেন আমরা বিষয়টির ওপর যথেষ্ট পরিমাণে লেখা পাই এবং তা থেকে যাচাই বাছাই করে লেখা ছাপতে পারি। বিষয় নির্ধারণ করে লেখা আহ্বান থেকে শুরু করে লেখা জমা নেওয়ার সর্বশেষ সময়সীমার মধ্যে রাষ্ট্রিক-সীমান্তিক-অসীমান্তিক, স্থানিক বা আন্তর্জাতিক পরিসরে ভাষিক-সাংস্কৃতিক পরিচয়ে বাংলা বা বাঙালির জীবনে অনেক কিছুই ঘটে যায় যা আমাদেরকে ভাবিত, তাড়িত করলেও সে সম্পর্কে তৎক্ষণাৎ আলোকপাত করার জন্য বিষয় পরিবর্তন করে প্রস্তুতি নেওয়া আমাদের পক্ষে সম্ভব হয় না। এ বছরের মাঝামাঝি সময় থেকে বাংলাদেশের রাজনৈতিক-সামাজিক পরিসরে ঘটমান বিষয়গুলো এখনও ঘোলাটে এবং দুই বাংলার মধ্যেকার ভাষিক-সাংস্কৃতিক হাজার বছরের ঐতিহাসিক যূথভাবনায় বড়ো ধরনের অভিঘাত তৈরি করছে যার চেহারাটি স্পষ্ট নয় তাই এ সংখ্যায় এ প্রসঙ্গে কোনোকিছুরই উল্লেখ আমরা করছি না। তাছাড়া নির্মোহ দৃষ্টিতে আলোকপাত করার জন্য সময়ের দূরত্বটাও অপরিহার্য। তবে বিগত সংখ্যায় কাকতালীয়ভাবে আমরা যে সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যমে মানুষের ভাবপ্রকাশের সক্ষমতা এবং তাৎক্ষণিক প্রতিক্রিয়া ব্যক্ত করার বেগ অনেকগুণ বাড়িয়ে দেওয়ার পাশাপাশি নতুন ধরনের অক্ষমতা ও সীমাবদ্ধতা তৈরি করা; মুঠোফোন, ইউটিউব, ফেসবুক ইত্যাদির ব্যবহারে মনোজগতে এর ক্রিয়া প্রতিক্রিয়ায় নিরন্তর ঘটে যাওয়া সামাজিক দৃশ্যপটের সত্য- মিথ্যা যাচাই, ভুয়ো খবর এবং বস্তুনিষ্ঠ সংবাদের মধ্যেকার তফাৎ নির্ণয়ের জটিলতা ও সমস্যার কথাগুলো বলেছিলাম বাংলাদেশে ঘটমান পরিস্থিতিতে তাইই যেন অপ্রিয় বাস্তবতা হয়ে আমাদের কাছে উপস্থাপিত হয়েছে।

এবারের সংখ্যায় মূল আলোচ্য বিষয় ‘পুরুষতান্ত্রিকতার বিরুদ্ধে লড়াই’-এর একটি সমকালীন ছবি উঠে এসেছে লাবনী জঙ্গীর আলোচনায়। তিনি তাঁর রচনায় মুর্শিদাবাদের মুসলমান শ্রমিক সমাজে নারীরা শিক্ষার আলোকবঞ্চিত হয়েও নিজেদের অবস্থান থেকে সম্পত্তির উত্তরাধিকারে ন্যায়সঙ্গত বন্টনের সংগ্রামটা কীভাবে চালিয়ে যাচ্ছেন তার ওপর আলোকপাত করেছেন। অন্যদিকে জনম মুখার্জির জীবনাভিজ্ঞতাভিত্তিক রচনাটিতে ধরা পড়েছে বাঙালি মধ্যবিত্ত ও নিম্ন-মধ্যবিত্ত পরিবারে বহমান পুরুষতান্ত্রিকতার জাঁতাকলে ঘরের মহিলা এবং মহিলা গৃহকর্মীদের নিপীড়িত ও বঞ্চিত হওয়ার অনুপুঙ্খ ছবি। বর্ণালী পাল তাঁর আলোচনায় পেশ করেছেন বাংলায় চিকিৎসাবিজ্ঞানের গ্রন্থ রচনায় স্ত্রীরোগ বিষয়ে পুরুষদের জ্ঞানতাত্ত্বিক সন্ত্রাসের নমুনা। পুরুষতান্ত্রিকতার বিরুদ্ধে ভিন্ন একটি বর্গের লড়াইকে শীর্ষাঙ্কর বসু তাঁর বিস্তৃত আলোচনায় রূপান্তরকামীদের শরীরভাষ্যের আলোকে বিশ্লেষণ করেছেন।

দুটো অনুবাদ আমরা এ সংখ্যায় প্রকাশ করছি। একটি ভি. রামস্বামীর করা শওকত আলীর উপন্যাস নাঢ়াই থেকে কিছু অংশ এবং অন্যটি ঐতিহাসিক চট্টগ্রাম অস্ত্রাগার লুণ্ঠন সংক্রান্ত মামলায় সূর্যসেন ও তাঁর সহযোগীদের বিরুদ্ধে দেওয়া রায়ের অপ্রকাশিত দলিল। এটি অনুবাদ করেছেন শওকত মোস্তফা। দলিলটির সম্পূর্ণ অনুবাদ আমরা জর্নালে পর্যায়ক্রমে প্রকাশ করব।

এছাড়া জর্নালের এ সংখ্যায় রয়েছে রবীন্দ্রনাথ প্রসঙ্গে বিজলীরাজ পাত্র, সন্দীপন সেন এবং ফকরুল আলমের তিনটি প্রবন্ধ; ঈশোপনিষদের অনুবাদ ও ব্যাখ্যা নিয়ে আত্মজিৎ মুখোপাধ্যায়, বাংলাভাষার অবকাঠামো নিয়ে অরিত্র মজুমদার, ঋত্বিক ঘটকের তিতাস নিয়ে অভীক মজুমদার, গুপী গাইন বাঘা বাইন চলচ্চিত্রে গান নিয়ে সত্যজিতের ছক ভাঙার বিষয়ে ঋতপ্রভ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়, উচ্চাঙ্গ সংগীতে অন্নপূর্ণার স্বতন্ত্র শিল্পকুশলতা নিয়ে মালিনী সিদ্ধান্ত, বাংলা সাহিত্যের ইতিহাস রচয়িতা অসিত কুমার বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়কে নিয়ে পারমিতা চক্রবর্তী, আচার্য শিবনাথ শাস্ত্রী বিষয়ে দেবস্মিতা শীট, দেশভাগের সময়ে শ্রেণিযুদ্ধ নিয়ে ফারুক চৌধুরীর রচনার পাশাপাশি একরাম আলী, শিবাজী বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়, জ্যোতির্ময় নন্দী, সুধীর দত্ত ও তুষার গায়েনের কবিতা এবং রঙিলী বিশ্বাস ও অমর মিত্রের গল্প।

The main theme selected for the current issue of the Journal is ‘The Contemporary fight against Patriarchy in Bangla (Bengal) and elsewhere.’ When we invite articles for the Journal, after selecting a main theme, we allot six to seven months to receive contributions from authors. And only after reviewing them, can we select those worth publishing. During the period between finalizing a main theme and finally receiving articles by the deadline, many things could happen that affect the lives of the people who identify themeselves as Bangali - linguistically and culturally. The ripple effects of the incidents are felt in all spheres of national-transnational-diasporic Bangali lives within and beyond the borders of their living spaces. Although these incidents cause anguish and force us to become gravely concerned, it’s not possible for us to alter our main theme right away to address the issues on hand. From the middle or about that time of this year, things have been happening in Bangladesh politically and socially, which are still in flux and having an impact on the legacy of the thousand years of historical lingua-cultural bonding and grouped thinking of the Bangali people. We refrain from referring to these events in this issue of the Journal since a clear picture of the situation has yet to emerge. Besides, it takes considerable time before a dispassionate objective analysis can take place. Coincidentally, the concerns we had raised in our past issue of the Journal regarding the blurring of the demarkation line between truth and lies (due to the use of cellphones and its impact on the innerworking of the thought process of an indvidual and the dilemma and complexity in separating fake news from authentic news), have come home to roost in Bangladesh as a bitter reality.

In tune with our main theme - The Contemporary fight against Patriarchy - Labani Jangi in her article depicts a picture of the fight led by the uneducated Muslim women labourers in Murshidabad of Pashchim Bango to claim their property rights under inheritance laws. Janam Mukherjee’s personal account of his experiences in Kolkata shows how women and housemaids of the middle and lower-middle class familes of Kolkata endure exploitation and deprivation in silence at the hands of their male partners and masters. Barnali Paul’s article exposes how male authors, due to their patriarchal mindset, ignobly dealt with the issues of female and children’s diseases in their respective Bangla Medical Science text books. Shirsankar Basu in his elaborate article paints a different kind of picture about the problems and struggles transgender groups face against the prevailing patriarchy.

We present two translation works in this issue. One is done by V. Ramaswamy. It’s an excerpt of the novel called Narai by Shawkat Ali. The other is the translation of the Judgment rendered against Surya Sen and his associates in the famed historical trial of Chittagong Armoury Raids. This hitherto unpublished document is being translated by Shawkat Mostafa, the rest of which will be periodically published in our upcoming issues.

In addition, the current issue of the Journal carries three separate articles on Rabindranath by Bijliraj Patra, Sandipon Sen and Fakrul Alam respectively; And articles by Atmajit Mukhopadhyay on translation and explanation of Ishoponishad; Auritro Majumder on the structure of Bangla language; Aveek Majumder on Ritwik Ghatak’s Titas; Ritaprava Bandyopadhyay on Satyajit Ray’s musical radical forte in Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen; Malini Siddhanta on artistry of sitar maestro Annapura; Paramita Chakraborty on historian of Bangla Literature Asit Kumar Bandyopadhyay; Debasmita Shit on Pundit Shibnath Shastri and Farooque Chowdhury on class war during the Partition, along with poems by Ekram Ali, Sibaji Bandyopadhyay, Jyotirmoy Nandy, Sudhir Dutta and Tushar Gayen and stories by Rongili Biswas and Amar Mitra are included in this issue.
